The problem with a disease where there is no cure and where treatments effect people in different ways is that anyone can slap up a website with an ebook and claim to have the cure for psoriasis when the fact is there is no cure. One big trend lately is the psoriasis diet. Like most things that are psoriasis treatment related you can find people who swear by it and others who think its a scam. The following is my take on the diet for psoriasis sufferers. It’s just my opinion so take it for what its worth to you.
The Facts
There is no official “Psoriasis Diet” promoted by doctors or reputable websites such as WebMD and no studies have shown any real connections between diet and psoriasis. There have however been studies that link weight gain to flare ups of psoriasis along with improvement via weight loss. Those with psoriasis are encouraged eat a diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy, lean meats and fish.
The Grey Area
Its very possible that certain foods such as gluten, dairy and alcohol can be triggers for some people while healthier foods like fish seem to help psoriasis symptoms in some. Studies have been done but researchers are still unclear of the connections as not everyone is effected the same way.
The Fiction
Following any so called psoriasis diet is the end all cure for psoriasis and the only treatment you will ever need. Anytime you see something that promotes a “cure” for psoriasis just walk away or find another website
My Take
I think the psoriasis diet has merit. Not because I think there are magic foods out there for you to treat psoriasis but because I think a healthy diet is better for your overall health in general. We also know that stress is one of the big triggers for psoriasis and a healthier body should certainly lower your stress levels. As they say, look good – feel good. I also think you have nothing to lose by trying this diet for psoriasis. If the diet doesn’t help at least your heart and body will be stronger.
I will also say that I do believe some foods could be triggers just by themselves in some people. If you think you are one of those people try an elimination diet. Eliminate one of the major foods mentioned such as red meat or dairy one at a time from your diet and see how your psoriasis is effected. If there is no change treat yourself to a big juicy steak.
