Oregon Grape as a Remedy for Psoriasis and Eczema

What is Oregon Grape
Oregon Grape is a shrub that gets its name from both the grape like cluster of berries it produces and from its use on the Oregon Trail by where it grows in large quantities. Early settlers are even said to have used the herb for treatments of fevers and stomach aches as they traveled West. The Oregon Grape is also considered the state flower of Oregon.

Oregon Grape as a Treatment for Psoriasis and Eczema
The roots of the Oregon Grape plant contain anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial agents that can be used to treat the flareups of both diseases. Both a tea and an extract can be made from the roots meaning it can be administered both internally and externally.

Some believe that eczema can be caused from poor circulation or other internal factors effecting the blood stream. As such, the Oregon Grape tea is recommended due to the way it helps detoxify the liver. Due to the unknown nature of diseases such as eczema and psoriasis it is doubtful this treatment would work for everyone and I would even be willing to bet the success rate is low but it is certainly worth a try. It however is not recommended to drink this more than seven days in a row because the anti-bacterial properties can also remove the good bacteria from your body.

Oregon Grape can also be purchased as an extract. Several over the counter creams are made with the Oregon Grape extract and it can even be added to your shampoo as a scalp psoriasis treatment. The Oregon Grape herb also comes in capsule form but as with the tea you should limit your intake to a week at a time.

Is Skin Zinc a Scam

While in CVS the other night I almost bought a product called Skin Zinc but I decided to check it out before dropping $30 on some lotion. I must also admit that I went into the research for the product and this post fully expecting to bash Skin Zinc pretty bad. I thought for sure I would uncover a Skin Zinc scam along the way but after looking around, I’m not sure it’s all bad. A few things made red flags go up but when you really look at what the product is I don’t think it is entirely a scam. Maybe just a little bit of over zealous advertising. Let’s take a look at some of the facts.

What is Skin Zinc
Skin Zinc is a product that claims to offer relief of psoriasis, dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis symptoms. The package comes with a Skin Zinc spray for use on the scalp and body and a Skin Zinc cream for use on the body only.

Skin Zinc Claims
This is where I think Skin Zinc gets a bit over zealous with there marketing campaign as they claim to be the #1 OTC medication for psoriasis relief. What they leave out is…#1 for what? Considering this is one of the few psoriasis products actually sold at Walmart, CVS and Walgreens … I’m guessing that’s #1 in sales.

The Active Ingredients
The active ingredient in the spray is zinc pyrithione while the active ingredient in the cream is salicylic acid. This is where Skin Zinc actually earns a little more credibility in the product itself. Salicylic acid is actually one of only two OTC active ingredients (along with coal tar) approved by the FDA for the treatment of psoriasis and zinc pyrithione is approved for the treatment of dandruff.

Skin Zinc Reviews
If you check Amazon Skin Zinc Reviews there seems to be a pretty positive experience with Skin Zinc. Checking around message boards is a different story however and the product seems to quickly get labeled a scam or people insist it doesn’t work.

A closer look at the Amazon reviews also brings up some suspect activity in my opinion. The oldest (ones at the bottom) reviews seem legit and mixed 50/50. This isn’t entirely unexpected for a product used on an incurable disease where people react differently to different products. The suspect activity comes in the last three reviews that kicked this up to a 4 out of 5 star product. The reviewers have very few Amazon site reviews and there last reviews were all of Skin Zinc. This leads me to believe marketing was in play again and profiles were created to look legit before giving Skin Zinc a 5 star rating. The reviews themselves don’t even read like natural reviews.

My Take – Does Skin Zinc Work?
I think calling Skin Zinc a scam is too harsh. The fact is they make, package and promote a product that contains active ingredients approved by the FDA. Now that being said I think the marketing unfortunately is far better than the product. There just aren’t as many positive responses from people as you would expect from the #1 selling psoriasis product. There is also a glaring omission of doctor referrals anywhere on their site and I have never heard of a doctor recommending Skin Zinc.

The price also seems a bit too high for what it does. There are many psoriasis creams available for far cheaper that help to relieve the symptoms of psoriasis just as Skin Zinc claims to and many of those come with recommendations from doctors.

Will I buy it? No
Should you buy it? Debatable

No for me because fortunately my psoriasis flare ups aren’t too severe (knock on wood) and respond to cheaper ointments and creams. Debatable for you because psoriasis is funny in that some things that don’t work for some are exactly what others need. Unfortunately that means trial and error til something works.

If you want to try it for yourself or if you’ve already tried it, drop us a comment and let us know how it worked. You can pick it up at Walmart, Walgreens, CVS or here at Amazon.

Natural Psoriasis Treatments

The best way to sum up psoriasis is… it sucks. There is no cure all and something that works for one person doesn’t even pretend to work on another and something that works one day has no effect another. Its a frustrating condition that leads sufferers to try any and all treatments. Below are a few of the natural psoriasis treatments floating around that have worked for some.

Vitamins and Supplements

Some people have found out from their doctors that they suffered from certain vitamin deficiencies such as Vitamin D, Zinc and Vitamin B12. Based in this information they began taking vitamin supplements and many reported improvement in their psoriasis. Others swear by fish oil supplements which can be taken orally or even rubbed on the effective areas. In fact the National Psoriasis Foundation even mentions fish oil under complimentary treatments on their website with favorable results.

Psoriasis Diet

I talked a little about this in my “Psoriasis Diet – Fact or Fiction” post but the long story short is a healthy diet can improve psoriasis. Certain foods such as red meats, dairy and alcohol have been shown to be triggers in some people so testing these foods in an elimination diet can’t hurt. This is also a good way to add fish oil to your diet by just eating the fish instead of taking the supplement. Fish, lean meats and veggies are all recommended eating in the psoriasis diet.

Dead Sea Salt

People travel thousands of miles to soak in the Dead Sea based on reports of the salty water curing all sorts of skin ailments. Many studies have been done between the connection of Dead Sea salt and psoriasis with positive results. It does however seem to be a temporary fix for most however as over half of those tested eventually have a re-occurrence. So before you travel half way across the world try a Dead Sea salt bath at home. You can buy Natural Dead Sea Salt here on Amazon. Soak in a bath for 15 or 20 minutes and your scales should come right off.

Olive Oil

Besides being a great natural moisturizer olive oil has been used successfully in treating scalp psoriasis. Try pouring warm extra virgin olive oil on your scalp before you go to bed. Cover with a towel or other wrap overnight then shampoo out the next morning. This should work to remove a lot of the scales on your scalp. Some recommend following this with aloe or jojoba oil to moisturize.

Sun

Many people report their psoriasis clears up in the summer when they are out in the sun more or after visiting the tanning bed. This makes complete sense considering doctors now use ultraviolet light in psoriasis treatment. So grab a towel and a chair and head to the beach for a few days. If its winter hit the tanning bed for a few visits.

Dry Skin Remedies

We are pretty tough on our skin and while the Winter is the most notorious for drying out our skin, the sun and even our home air conditioners can dry out our skin the rest of the year. Below are a few dry skin remedies to try next time you notice your skin starting to dry out.

Choose creams and ointments over lotion

At the first signs of dry skin the first instinct is to slap on some lotion but for those with really dry skin the lotions don’t really do very much. Lotions are made with mostly water which evaporates quickly on very dry skin. Instead go with ointments to lock in moisture after a bath or shower. Or try one of the many creams such as Cerave or Vanicream if you want something a little less greasy.

Stop taking long hot showers
This one is tough and to be honest something I’m not sure I’m ready to give up. Heck sometimes I take two or three long hot showers in the same day. Turns out the whole time I thought I was relieving stress or waking myself up in the morning I was hurting my dry skin. The hot water strips away the oils in your skin so in theory the cooler the water the better.

Add back the oils
Well if you are like me and not willing to give up the hot showers then you’re going to need a dry skin remedy to add back those missing oils and what better way to do that than oil. Most any oil will do in fact. Vegetable, olive, sunflower, peanut, coconut, almond and tea have all been used as natural home remedies for dry skin.

Change your soap
Let me get this straight… not only do I want you to stop taking long showers but I also want you to stop using that new sex panther body wash that the ladies love so much… unfortunately… yes. Those deodorant soaps strip whatever oil is left on your skin after the hot shower and do even more damage. Doctors overwhelmingly recommend going with dove soap. I made this change years ago and it does work. Although I admit to falling for those darn axe commercials every once in awhile.

Drink Water

As the now famous Tony Horton would say, “drink your water people”. Many times dry skin is the result of just not getting enough water so be sure to get your 8 glasses a day and even more if you are out in the sun.

Take a bath
I realize taking a bath is contrary to the advice in stop taking long hot showers but if you limit yourself to 15 minutes and add skin smoothing ingredients like colloidal oatmeal, vinegar or olive oil along with some essential oils you will be doing your skin a world of good.
